October is Mental Health Awareness Month.
Mental health is a topic close to my heart because I have had my share of mental health issues.
I have a history of complex trauma, abuse, addiction and a head injury.
All pretty major risk factors.
So how do I stay sane? Trust me, it's work.
Meditation, eating well, fitness, yoga, prayer, so much more...
MY SELF CARE GAME IS STRONG!
The truth is that mental health is an ongoing process that needs guidance and support, diagnosed or not.
If your mental health has suffered (especially lately), know that you are not alone.
Many of us have mental health concerns, but most of us donβt talk about it!
There is power in vulnerability, so speak up and be vulnerable.
Allow yourself to be seen and heard.
I used to feel ashamed about my mental health, but guess what?
I donβt anymore because I know we are all trying our best to cope!
Here are some tips to help yourself and your loved ones:
ππ½ Always check in with yourself and be sure to prioritize your well-being
ππ½ Take care of your basic needs; food, rest, movement
ππ½ Make time in your schedule for self care practices
ππ½ Do things that bring you joy
ππ½ Don't take anything personal - we are all going through something these days
ππ½ Always check in on your loved ones, a "how are you?" message goes a long way
ππ½ Never belittle your or your loved ones feelings, it is a real issue
ππ½ Be patient with yourself and your loved ones' struggles, healing takes time and everyone's journey is different
ππ½ If your loved one is having a hard time, say: "How can I support you?" or "How can I help?β (ask yourself the same things)
ππ½ Always ask politely if your loved one is available for a chat before emotionally dumping on them: "Having a hard day, can you talk?β
ππ½ If someone is having a bad day and taking it out on you, excuse yourself politely "I'm not sure I can talk now, let's catch up laterβ
ππ½ Offer a hug or other physical sign of affection when someone needs it, even YOU!
ππ½ Reach out when you need support; friend, relative, therapist, professional
ππ½ Don't be afraid of being vulnerable, itβs a sign of courage and power
ππ½ If youβre having a hard time, never underestimate the power of a walk, a good cry, journaling and good music
Here are some self care practices if you are struggling with mental health:
ππ½see a therapist
ππ½call a crisis line
ππ½get acupuncture
ππ½do some yoga
ππ½go for a run
ππ½go hiking
ππ½take nature walks
ππ½get a massage
ππ½take supplements (often imbalanced moods are just a nutrient deficiency, youβll need guidance for this)
ππ½do some journaling
ππ½talk to someone
